But the poor have all the rights to get the fruits of their labour and live a secured life. Both the rich and the poor should know how no keep their feet on the ground. If the poor man goes up ladder in life, he should be able to recognize who his true friend is and stay away from pretences in life. The rich man also in his days of prosperity should be able to make out who are with him only because of his power of money. It depends on how practical the person is to understand the truth of life.

(A5) Write an appreciation of the poem. Refer to the earlier poems for the points to be covered for appreciation.
Ans:
Money - the poem by William H. Davies, talks about the lives of haves and have-nots, The poet is disillusioned with living the life as a rich person. He blames money for leading the life of falsehood. He begins the poem with an exclamation that shows the anguish in his heart and he feels money is the root cause of that. He is tired of having untrue friends all around him. Even a child has the freedom to use the trumpet the way he wants to if he does not know how to blow it. But the poet does not have the liberty to lead his life according to his wishes because he is rich. He decides not to let the world know about his freedom

The poet has thought extensively about life and has found out that even after working hard throughout the day, the poor cannot make their family members happy because of their financial insecurity So, they are never light-hearted. But even these poor people laugh when they see the rich lose their prosperity. The poet wants that the poor people need not become rich as their life will become artificial. But the rich must experience hardship so that they can handle the reverse situation well

The poem ends with another exclamation which comes out of the distressed heart of the poet who has experienced so much of falseness in friendship because of his prosperity. They love his money and have never been true to him. he is happy now as he has lost his prosperity but gained in true friendship.

The theme of the poem is about a rich man who wants to be poor in search of real happiness.

The poet has used the rhyme scheme in the first four stanzas where the second and fourth lines rhyme. But in the last stanza he changes the rhyme scheme as he is repeating the first line of the poem with the first line of the fifth stanza where he laments his days of prosperity. The figures of speeches used by the poet are common ones but used appropriately to show the power of money as well as the untrue lives led by the rich people. They also bring out the deep thoughts of the poet.

The poem has a clear message about the value of true friendship which cannot be purchased by money. Money is important in life as long as it does not have to compromise with falsehood. When the poet became poor, he got contentment in spite of not having the power of money as he has gained a mare valuable thing in life a few true friends. This message impresses me the most as it is so difficult to find a true friend in the materialistic world.

(A6) (i) Visit a library and read a few poems written by
              William H. Davies.
Ans:                             A Great Time
                       Sweet Chance, that led my steps abroad,
                    Beyond the town, where wild flowers grow --
A rainbow and a cuckoo, Lord,
How rich and great the times are now!
Know, all ye sheep
And cows, that keep
On staring that I stand so long
In grass that's wet from heavy rain --
A rainbow and a cuckoo's song
May never come together again;
May never come
This side the tomb.

A Fleeting Passion

                      Thou shalt not laugh, thou shalt not romp,
                          Let's grimly kiss with bated breath;
                                    As quietly and solemnly
                                As Life when it is kissing Death.
                                 Now in the silence of the grave,
                             My hand is squeezing that soft breast;
                               While thou dost in such passion lie,
                                  It mocks me with its look of rest.

                               But when the morning comes at last,
                               And we must part, our passions cold,
                              You'll think of some new feather, scarf
                                To buy with my small piece of gold;
                                 And I'll be dreaming of green lanes,
                               Where little things with beating hearts
                                Hold shining eyes between the leaves,
                                  Till men with horses pass, and carts.

                                            A Plain Life
No idle gold -- since this fine sun, my friend,
Is no mean miser, but doth freely spend.

No precious stones -- since these green mornings show,
Without a charge, their pearls where'er I go.

No lifeless books -- since birds with their sweet tongues
Will read aloud to me their happier songs.

No painted scenes -- since clouds can change their skies
A hundred times a day to please my eyes.

No headstrong wine -- since, when I drink, the spring
Into my eager ears will softly sing.

No surplus clothes -- since every simple beast
Can teach me to be happy with the least.
