(A1) Discuss with your friend how she/he spent the whole day that was beneficial for others.
Ans: My friend Snehal told me how she spent her birthday at orphan home and old age home that proved beneficial for others - 

(a) She offered food packets to the homeless.

(b) Early in the morning she taught yoga and meditation to neighbours.

(c) She took a small part in a literacy program to help children and elders.

(d) She visited a local orphan home and celebrate her birthday with them.

(e) While travelling to home in road she shared her car with an old women.

(b) He/She always keep clean his / her colony. He / she never throw anything on road.

(A2) (i) ....'was it well or sorely spent'? Explain the meaning and give illustrations.
Ans: In this line the poet calculates weather your day is worth or waste.

1. The poet said that if spent a day gone without improving someone's life it will be waste. So at least try to improve the lives of others. That day will be calculated as the lost if you spent it in a sorely or badly in conduct.

2. On the other hand if the day was spent in fine way that will be marked as trail of kindness in someone's life.
Or
In this line the poet, who is asking your day is good or worst.

The poet said that if you spend your day without helping other. It means that you waste your day. You must try to improve the living of others.
If you did well for others, it means you utilize your day.
Through this line the poet wants to know that did you spend your day well or sorely.

(ii) 'As you close your eyes in slumber do you think that God
would say, You have earned one more tomorrow by the work you did today?' 
Elaborate the idea expressed in these lines.
Ans: This line expressed the idea of self analysis or introspection about your today's have you earned your tomorrow. This line expresses the idea of evaluation actions and of your day by sell.

If you as a reader are unsure how their day was spent then close eyes in slumber and think about what God (inner voice) would have to say (to you)

God response positively on your deeds and if you feels you have done well, then tomorrow is earned. If not, God gently evaluates your deeds of the day and if it is not satisfactory you might not came your tomorrow (Here God means your Inner Voice).

This is the final line of the poem. Through this line, the poet asks us to introspect ourselves that what we did today.
The last lines tell the reader if they are not sure how they spent their day that they can close their eyes in slumber (sleep) and think about what God would have to say to them. If after considering the response of God, a reader feels as if they've done well, then tomorrow is assured. Otherwise, God might look kindly on the actions or inactions of the day and tomorrow might not come.

* About the poem / poet / : 
                                      Edgar Guest (On August 20, 1881 to 1959) was born in England and was brought to the United States when he was ten years old. He began his writing career in 1895 at the age of fourteen. Edgar Guest is known as peoples poet for his simple style and optimistic tone of writing. Guest is an American writer of newspaper and magazines.

*About the title :
 The title If you Earned your Tomorrow is very introspective. It suggests that everyone should analyse his her actions whether it is good or bad, useful or not. It also evaluates your act of goodness your behaviours with others and what have you done (good things) to earn your better tomorrow? The title also promotes - do good deeds for better future (Tomorrow means future) and world. So title is apt.

* Theme : It is an inspirational poem. In this poem, the speaker is asking the readers (You) whether they have done anything to improve the life of another human being or not. It is up to you whether you will have a better future or not. Therefore, one should consider one's actions and deeds carefully and  plan accordingly for a better future.

* Poetic devices, language, style : The poem is the best example of a simple uplifting style of writing piece. It is a four verse poem that is divided into sets of 4 lines (quatrains). The rhyme scheme pattern of the stanza is aabb ccaa ddee ffaa In each stanza sound - lay/ is repeated except third. The poetic devices like Interrogation, Alliteration, Inversion, Antithesis, Personification, and Synecdoche is used in the poem. The poet uses Interrogative style to elaborate his idea of goodness.

* Special features-tone and type : The poem is written in Interrogative tone-where a number of probing questions to a reader about how they spend their days. The wording of the poem is in the form of searching questions. Each stanza includes 2 to 3 questions. This special feature of Poetry Written in Questions leaves deep impact on the readers mind and it compel to think them on it. The tone of the poem is suggestive that at the last of day you have to eam your tomorrow with good deeds which is your duty.

* Values, message : The present poem gives a great message of good deeds. One should consider one's actions and deeds carefully and plan accordingly for a better future. In this world you have to earn your tomorrow with your good actions.


* Your opinion about the poem : I like this poem very much because it gives an inspiration to be a good human being and it suggests that one should do good to others. It gives me positive attitude of act well. It is very inspirational poem. It gives me message like - How far that little candle throws his beams! So shines a good deed in a weary world. 'So I like this poem.
