(ii) Imagine you have visited the jungles of Nagarhole. Write a report, to be published in your college magazine / in a local newspaper.
Ans:              Visit to the jungles of Nagarhole

Ajay Pawar
Mumbai, April 15

The NCE unit of XYZ College, Nashik, planned a visit to the jungles of Nagarhole. Only twenty-five students were allowed to go on a first come first served basis. The college had arranged our stay in a beautiful resort in the vicinity of the jungle.

The programme was checked down by our college NCE coordinator Mr. Prashant Kulkarni, with the help of a tour guide. We reached around 8 pm at night, had early dinner and went to sleep since the next day was going to be a busy day for us as it would be our first day of the visit to the jungle.

The next morning, we started our journey in a bus to the jungle. Our tour guide informed the name Nagarhole came from two words, Naga (snake) and hole stream). This park is also known as Rajiv Gandhi National Park.

While going by the bus, we saw elephants, cheeta, sambar deer roaming around the park peacefully. They seemed to be used to tourists visiting the place and so our bus did not disturb their freedom of movement. Our tourist guide told us that Nagarhole has been declared as the 37th Tiger Reserve of India. He was telling us that if we were lucky, could see Bengal Tiger Indian Leopard, striped hyena, Sloth Bear which are sometimes spotted in the park. For the sake of an adventurous experience, we were praying to have a look at any one of them at least. But on the first day. luck did not favour us to have a glimpse of any of them.

Nagarhole jungle is also famous for sandalwood and teak wood. On our way to the jungle we saw many of these trees. The guides also informed us that from these two trees the Karnataka state government earns a good amount of revenue. He also told us to buy sandalwood sticks as souvenirs, from the village bazaar

The natural beauty of the jungle is breathtaking. We saw small streams, hills valleys and waterfalls And a surprise was waiting for us on our visit on the next day: we saw a Bengal Tiger sitting quietly on the bank of a stream. I was impressed to see the majesty of the animal in its natural habitat. We all were very excited but our guide instructed us to maintain silence and not disturb the wild life. We also saw many langurs hanging from the trees. Some jumped on the top of our bus but did not harm us in anyway. There were a variety of birds but we could not recognize most of them. As it was not safe to stay out of the bus for a long time, bird watching was not possible

The tribals who live in the jungle are called Jenu Kurubas. They are mainly honey eatherers, Tenu means honey in Kannada. The human-wild life conflict is a major problem in this jungle as wild animals and the human habitation. The Karnataka Government is taking steps like solar fencing, digging of trenches for the safety of the tribals.

Our experience in the Nagarhole jungle was a memorable one. We did a bit of trekking also. Most importantly, we had a good training of how to stay together, enjoy travelling in a group and co-operate with one another. These were the bonuses apart from being so close to Nature and wild life.

(iii) Shaaz has contributed towards conserving the wild animals and their habitat. Your college has decided to spread the message in the society and arrange a rally. Prepare an ‘Appeal’ to ensure maximum participation informing about the day, date and other relevant details.
Ans: Leopard in the IIT campus", reads the headline of a leading daily Friends, have you ever thought why the leopard should leave its own habitat and the human territory? Aren't we to be blamed for that? We are encroaching upon their habitat and they have no choice but to come out and enter into our jurisdiction.
Tigers are an endangered species today. The day may not be far away when the kids of tomorrow will only know the names of the tigers like they see the photographs of dinosaurs.
Friends, we are fortunate to have among us Mr. Shaaz Jung, a wildlife photographer, cinematographer, big cat tracker, who believes in shooting with a camera and not shooting with a gun'.

Our college is going to arrange a rally along with Mr. Shaz to create awareness about wild life conversation. This is the need of the hour and Mr. Shan has kindly consented to lead the rally in spite of his busy schedule.

We want huge response from all of you. Come and join us in this noble cause On Friday, 12th of July, the rally will start from our college premises (XYZ, College, Fort) at am. Please be there on time. Wild life conservation is our duty because :
Save it to cherish
or leave it to perish
